Putting away fish for family, friends, and elders, taking care of my kids fulltime around the clock, pushing an ever mountainous collection of paperwork, and sometimes all three simultaneously, is a little glimpse of what my July has been all about. I thank everyone for their patience with me during this summer’s hectivity. We have had so many laughs in the office realizing now where some of the peculiar Dan Salmonisms come from, as we can finally relate a little more to his work life. Needless to say, I’ve missed him more than ever before.
At the height of our summer, we had twenty-one people in Igiugig, none of them here as tourists. All of them were here for our hydrokinetic demonstration project and our water-treatment upgrade project, all the activity that has fueled our local economy in addition to those that have come here to fish. Our local lodges and camps, boats, and trucks were rented by University of Washington scientists, CCI Industry safety specialist, Ocean Renewable Power Company personnel, Iliamna Lake Contractor personnel, LGL biologists, Marsh Creek LLC personnel, mechanics, and the sort. The week of July 14th the device was deployed, and putting clean power to the grid!
Meanwhile, most of the men were gone fishing for the summer, so we relied on lodge personnel to help out with activities such as teaching us how to operate the fire truck, or reversing our tanker trucks, and Jocko –the one man show— to help change tires or garage doors. We relied on our volunteer WWOOFERS for help with net setting, keeping up with wood chopping and yard maintenance for our elders, and keeping the village looking beautiful.
We ended June with a visit from KattiJo who is completing an ecotourism study for Igiugig. Then on July 1st Lisa Murkowski and rural staffer Deborah Vo visited for an energy tour. We had the opportunity to discuss rural issues, and show off Igiugig Village, -- the greenhouse, the wind turbines, the solar thermal activity, the powerhouse and the ORPC RivGen® Unit. Christina provided freshly made salmon caviar, smoked salmon on cracker, and greenhouse fresh tomatoes and basil with mozzarella for the occasion. We celebrated more on July 4th with a community picnic and parade. Even though it was raining and we barbecued indoors, everyone was in high spirits since the burn ban was finally lifted and we were happy for rain to nourish the berries.
Now at the end of month we will be completing a gas card system install. As for the water upgrade – the intake has been installed, the water storage tank is substantially complete, and the interior work is coming together. On to AUGUST!
