Ulus are ready; even if you’re not
A weekend before the 4th of July celebration our ulus are flying and guts, fins, and heads are chopped off and tossed into the river and flays of salmon are cut for winter storage. The buzz always returns every summer; the salmon are coming, the salmon are coming and it looks like another record year of sockeye fish! With that said Renae, Alicia, Greg, Tia, Kiara, Keisha, Shea and I all gathered around the splitting table (not all at the same time) and split close to 700 fish if not more. Greg was busy checking and picking the net, Renae was carefully instructing us around the table, Tia, Kiara, Shea and Keisha (all taking turns through-out the days) cleaning and putting fish on the table, and Alicia prepping the salmon for Renae and me to split. Music blaring in the back ground and the sports fishermen and guides floating down river hoping to catch a beautiful rainbow trout and seagulls being gluttons for salmon scraps; we split our fish until the sun set after midnight for two days.
Not only we were busy putting our fish away for the winter, AlexAnna has an update for you on our two ANA grants and what we have been learning in yugestun which is followed by the cisslat. Summer reading club is well under way, we still have a long way to go until we reach our goal but I believe we can do it! Tanya has written about our festive 4th of July celebration and how some tears were shed and candy was chased down by some of our elders watching the parade of vehicles. If you have not heard yet, Christina Salmon and Jeff Bringhurst (farmer John) are getting married! You can check out their wedding invites and please remember to send in you RSVP! Tangertua sayiit (I see salmon) photos this year of the salmon harvest followed by your favorite people and the local announcements.
Have a wonderful and safe rest of the summer! Soon school will be back in business and parents will celebrate!
